Being a preppers naturally means that you’re gearing up to endure hardship due to natural and/or man made disaster. Usually that means that you’re going to have to mentally adjust to the idea of doing without a lot of things that we normally take for granted. Fortunately, being prepared to survive isn’t all bad all the time and occasionally we find some little thing that makes parts of survival a whole lot nicer. One issue that’s paramount to preppers is good food. Fortunately if you look hard enough you can find some food items you might not really think about when you’re making your survival plan. Today we’re going to look at one of those little things that will probably make you happy you had it around, Red Feather Pure Canned Butter.

Red Feather Pure Canned Butter is the perfect addition to the preppers survival pantry

Preppers Bug Out Bag: Red Feather Pure Canned Butter, What Is It?

Red Feather Pure Canned Butter is exactly what it says it is on the label, it’s pure creamery butter preserved in a can. This is the real deal, it’s not powdered butter or some freeze dried substitute. When you open the can you’ll find a rich, creamy, golden yellow butter that for all intents and purposes is like the butter you get at the grocery store in terms of color, consistency and taste. You can use it straight from the can as no preparation is necessary other than opening the can.

Red Feather Pure Canned Butter is in a pretty handy package size for prepper/survival food storage

Red Feather Pure Canned Butter is in a pretty handy package size for prepper/survival food storage

This butter is good, it looks and behaves like real butter and it tastes great. It’s in a 12 ounce can and once you open a can it keeps at room temperature just like a stick of butter. It’ll keep even longer if you can keep it cold, depending on your situation. Red Feather Pure Canned Butter can be spread on bread or added to other foods during the cooking process. This has a multi-year shelf life although like most canned foods you’ll need to rotate your stock occasionally because it will eventually go rancid after several years. It will of course, keep longer if it’s stored cold.

Preppers Bug Out Bag: Red Feather Pure Canned Butter, What I Didn’t Like

Red Feather Pure Canned Butter comes in a 12 oz can which is actually kind of big for throwing in your 3 day bag. I wish it was available in a smaller can, like 6 ounces or so. Because it’s not freeze dried or powdered it has a much shorter shelf like than those types of products. Freeze dried food can be kept for 20 or more years depending on how it’s processed, packaged and stored. You’ll need to be aware of the manufacturing dates of the Red Feather Pure Canned butter and keep track of that as your stock will need to be rotated more frequently than with other prepper food. Note that the cans are dated and the date on the cans of butter are the manufacturing dates, not the expiration dates.

Preppers Bug Out Bag: Red Feather Pure Canned Butter – The Verdict

Red Feather Pure Canned Butter is actually a pretty great addition to your prepper survival food pantry. It’s one of those things like bacon that we all take for granted but we would surely miss if we didn’t have any around for awhile. Keep some Red Feather Pure Canned Butter in your prepper pantry and you’ll be glad that you had the foresight to pack it away!

Today we’re going to take a look at the Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Kit. One of the big concerns for preppers is food. That subject covers a variety of topics like food storage, food preservation and food safety. Today we’ll look at one of the popular prepackaged options for food storage.

The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit, What Is It?

Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Kit is a convenient, portable survival food system for preppers

Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Kit is a convenient, portable survival food system for preppers

The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit is a prepacksed assortment of dried foods and accessories to help you prepare that food. It includes 72 individual servings of freeze dried food, some fire starter kits, a water purification bottle and ius packaged in a plastic waterproof bucket about the size of a five gallon paint bucket with a built in handle.

There is an excellent variety of food that includes meal items like pasta and vegetable rotini, stroganoff, soup, cereal, a milk substitute and more. There are a total of 72 servings but 28 of those are milk and orange drink.

The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit, What I Liked

I like the convenience of The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit. The fact that it’s freeze dried means that a large quantity of food is lightweight and portable. It’s in a bucket with a carry handle which means you have use of the bucket as well as the contents. I also liked that there are some good extras in here like fire starting aids and a water purification bottle. These are good accessories that you may not think of during an emergency and the fact that they’re already in the bucket is very handy.

I also like that this is pre-configured as 2000 calories of food per day for two people for 3 days. This makes it a perfect “no brainer”as far as calculating how much you need to store depending on your sitation and family size. Since it’s 2000 calories that means that in a pinch you could stretch it out a bit if necessary to make it last a little longer.

I’ve eaten the Wise Company dried food and it’s pretty decent. I wouldn’t want to live off of dehydrated food forever but in a pinch it’s great and certainly better than not eating at all. The Wise Company dried food all has distinct flavors and a large variety to help keep it from getting boring. Also, depending on your situation, you may be able to supplement this with locally sourced food via foraging, hunting or fishing.

Lastly, these packages don’t require a heater like MRE’s just access to some boiling water. The included fire starter fuel will help facilitate that.

The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit, What I Didn’t Like

Have I mentioned this is freeze dried? It’s freeze dried food. That isn’t terrible but you’re going to get tired of it eventually. It’s probably a good idea to plan ahead and have some canned or preserved foods to go along with this or supplement it. I recommend you order some samples and try them straight out of the pouch, made per the directions. Then try experimenting with some other things to see how you can make it more to your liking if you’re not crazy about it.

The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit, The Final Verdict

The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit is exactly what it claims it is, a convenient, prepackaged bucket of meals meant to last three days for two adults. It’s portable, lightweight and easily prepared. One last thing, since it’s freeze dried, that means it’s very shelf stable and could be good for a couple of decades depending on how it’s stored. This means you won’t have to think about it much or rotate your food stock if you go with the The Wise Company 72 Hour Ultimate Dried Food Storage Kit.

Preppers Bug Out Bag Gear Review: Resqme Car Escape Tool, What is it?

The Resqme car escape tool is a pocket sized emergencysurvival tool preppers bug out bag

The Resqme car escape tool is a pocket sized emergency survival tool

The Resqme Car Escape Tool is a small hand held emergency rescue tool that you can use to escape a car in the event of an accident that leaves a door and/or seat belt jammed or inoperable. This is a small pocket sized device that can also be attached to your key ring. The Resqme actually incorporates two different tools to help you escape from a vehicle.

First, there is a built in razor knife that is designed to quickly cut through an automobile seat belt. This razor knife is protected by a pull out safety clip until you need it. The second tool is a spring loaded stainless steel spike that allows you to break a cars side window. Both of these tools are essential in a survival situation where minutes count and both are handy right on your key ring.

The Resqme car escape tool fits right on your key ring so you’re always prepared for an emergency auto escape

The Resqme car escape tool is handy. It’s about the same size as a car remote and fits right on your key ring. It was designed by first responders so it’s carefully thought out. The Resqme comes in a variety of colors and is priced very affordably. You can typically pick up a pair of Resqme car escape tools for around $20.

I went to a wrecking yard and purchased part of an old seat belt and a car side window to test this on and it does exactly what it claims to do. It cut through the seat belt remnant very easily. It also broke the piece of glass I had on the first try. Overall I’d have to say that the Resqme car escape tool is well made and does exactly what it claims to do.

Preppers Bug Out Bag Gear Review: Resqme Car Escape Tool – What I Didn’t Like

Since the Resqme car escape tool is such a small and simple device there isn’t a whole lot to find fault with. It fits in your pocket or on your key ring and it is the size of a car remote – although I’d have to say it’s the size of the largest car remotes. It’s about 3 inches long so that might be a consideration for you. While I didn’t experience any problems with the two units I received I have seen some reports about people having trouble with the glass breaking mechanism so when you get your Resqme make sure you check it out thoroughly to make sure it’s working as intended.

I think the Resqme car escape tool is a must buy. It’s inexpensive and it definitely does what it claims to do. It’s small and compact and they come in several colors so you can get one for each member of your family that drives a car. Chances are, you’ll never need to use this car rescue tool but it’s a great idea to have one just in case. The Resqme is a simple survival tool that can turn out to a lifesaver!

Preppers Bug Out Bag: Prepping for El Nino

Check out our guide for prepping for El Nino

It’s January and it’s possible that on the US west coast we’re in for an extremely wet winter due to the meteorological phenomena known as El Nino. While you probably should have been thinking about this and prepping for El Nino before now, it’s not too late to get some things together and do some preparation for some of the possible El Nino consequences such as flooding, getting stranded, power and gas outages and more.

In this article we’re going to focus on emergency preparation steps that you can take for your family as opposed to your property, although we’ll have some tips for a couple of property related issues as well.

Preppers Bug Out Bag: Prepping for El Nino At Home

First up lets talk about prepping for El Nino around the house. .

  • Flashlights and spare batteries – We recommend a couple of, waterproof, quality flashlights, these should be placed in a central location and the entire family should know where they are and how to operate them as well as how to change the batteries and bulbs should the need arise. It’s also not a bad idea to keep a small flashlight in each bedroom in the night stand or within reach of the bed. Don’t forget to have spare batteries for each flashlight.

We recommend this SOG DE-06 LED Flashlight. It’s a high quality light that is rugged and at 750 lumens it is very bright for its size

  • First Aid Kit – don’t skimp on this. Do yourself a favor and get a professional quality first aid kit. Be familiar with the contents and how to use the majority of what’s in your first aid kit. Make sure that everyone in your home knows where this is stored.

The Elite First Aid Fully Stocked GI Issue Medic Kit Bag is a professional first aid kit that contains just about anything you’ll need at a great price

  • MacGyver Tool Kit – this is basically a few tools like standard and phillips head screwdrivers, a sharp knife or a leatherman type multitool, heavy duty gloves, duct tape, some paracord, a small pry-bar or multi purpose tomahawk and a crescent wrench and/or channel lock pliers. Know where your main gas and electric shut-offs are and how to turn them off.

  • Radio – yes a good old transistor radio – or check out this digital version that has a hand crank charger built right in – just as a backup for getting important information and updates if the power and cable are down for extended period of time. Don’t forget the extra batteries!
  • Dry Sack with a change of clothes
  • Cash – keep a VIP (Very Important Papers) bag with any important documents and a couple hundred dollars in cash in a safe place because if the power’s out you may not be able to access important info stored on computers and tablets. The cash is in case you can’t access an ATM machine due to power outage or other issues.
  • Food and Water – You should have a three day supply of food and water available for each person in the house. This can be as simple as bottled water and pre-packaged MRE type meals. Don’t forget about food and water for your pets! If you’re using dehydrated or freeze dried foods factor in the water you’ll need to reconstitute that food in addition to drinking water.

  • Camp stove – a backpacking or survival camp stove will ensure you have hot meals and coffee etc if power and gas are out for an extended period of time. Don’t forget to have extra fuel for this if required. If you have a gas bbq you may be able to use that as well (but not indoors!). Don’t forget to top off your gas cylinders and have a spare if possible
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene supplies
  • Important prescription and over the counter medications.
  • Backup Power for your cell/mobile device – a back up battery that will charge a dead cell phone can literally be a lifesaver. There are lots of these available, choose one that can charge all of your devices and or charge a device multiple times before it is exhausted.

The Anker PowerCore 20100 – Ultra High Capacity Power Bank will charge an iPhone 6s a total of 7 times! this is the perfect battery back up for El Nino Preppers

  • Backup Generator – a backup generator is a bit of an investment but very handy to have if you can swing it. If you have a person in your home who relies on a powered medical device then it’s high priority. It’s also a good idea to have one of these if you rely on medications that are perishable and need to be refrigerated. If you have a backup generator make sure you have a fuel supply for it and take the time to understand how to operates it and how to connect it to whatever you’re going to be using it for.

Another good preppers tool is to have emergency alerts sent directly to your cell phone. In many areas you can sign up to have emergency info sent as text or audio alerts right to your cell phone. Check with your city and county to see if there’s an emergency alert system in place that you can subscribe to.

Preppers Bug Out Bag: Prepping Your Car For El Nino

Some things to consider if you need to be in your car a lot:

  1. How are your tires?
  2. Windshield wipers and washer fluid. Check these and have a spare set of wipers with you. Learn how to install/change your windshield wipers, in most cases this is a fairly simple procedure that doesn’t require any tools and can be done in about five minutes.
  3. Are all of your headlights, brake lights, turn signals in working order?
  4. Does your horn work? I know this seems obvious but many folks don’t use their horns much and can be surprised when they attempt to use the horn and nothing happens!

If you’re a commuter, you may find yourself in a situation where roads are closed or blocked due to El Nino weather consequences such as washed out roads or fallen trees. You can prepare for this by familiarizing yourself with alternate and backup routes to and from your home. If you’re not one hundred percent sure of alternate routes, print some maps or driving directions out ahead of time in case cell service is unreliable when you need it. Store these documents in a ziploc or a waterproof map case.

You’re going to want to have an emergency car bag with you if you don’t already keep a bug out bag in your car or at work, especially if you’re a long distance commuter. Every car in your household should have its own kit. You car kit should include the following:

  1. Dry sack with change of clothes
  2. Flashlight, whistle or air horn, road flares or emergency glow sticks
  3. Water and snacks
  4. First Aid Kit and Sanitation supplies
  5. Car escape tool and a multi tool

  6. Rain Gear (consider throwing a brightly  colored reflective safety vest in with your rain gear)
  7. Back up battery for your cell phone

Preppers Bug Out Bag: Prepping For El Nino Year Round

Prepping for El Nino will help you and your family weather the storm should things get particularly ugly in your area. As with any good emergency preparation, have a plan and talk about it with everyone in the house. Take the time to familiarize yourself and family members with all of your emergency supplies. Make sure that everyone knows where everything is and how to safely and properly use the items you’ve stored. Always remember that if you’ve taken the time to assemble these items that you need to periodically inspect everything and make sure it’s in working order/fresh batteries etc.

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Mountain House #10 Cans Survival Food Review – What Is It?

In previous articles about survival food I’ve mentioned Mountain House Just In Case Buckets. Those buckets have pouches of freeze dried food and come in a large variety of meals. Mountain House also makes size 10 cans of freeze dried food that you can use instead of, or as a supplement to your freeze dried meals.

The Mountain House #10 cans of survival food come in a variety of flavors and are considered to be at the higher end of survival food – sort of “gourmet in a can” if you will. These can have a plastic snap on lid and you scoop out what you need (one cup is one serving) and just add boiling water. After a few minutes you’ve got a hearty serving of food that’s reminiscent of moms home cooked food.

Mountain House #10 cans come in a pretty good variety of flavors. Flavors include Vegetable Stew, Chicken with Rice, Chili Mac with Beef and even Lasagne with Meat sauce. There are also some cans that are more of a supplement to other ingredients, like Diced Beef, Wild Rice and Mushroom Pilaf and Diced Chicken. Lastly there are even freeze dried peas or green beans and even dessert type items like freeze dried strawberries!

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Mountain House #10 Cans Survival Food Review – What I Like

Mountain House Mexican Rice survival food

Mountain House Mexican Rice with Chicken survival food in #10 cans

Mountain House #10 Cans are a pretty awesome idea and well executed for survival food. First of all, the idea that preppers can have a large variety of food items, all freeze dried and easily measured out per portion is pretty ingenious. The fact that they are all “just add water” is super convenient. The fact that these are cans as opposed to foil pouches means that the shelf life is significantly longer – up to 25 years for some products.

They’re also freeze dried which means transporting them is much easier than regular heavy canned goods. No prepper wants to deal with the logistics of hauling around heavy cans of food so these solve that problem nicely. The large selection of items they have will make things a little easier for those preppers with families and young kids, you’ll have less fighting and complaining about having to eat the same thing day after day.

I’ve tried a couple of these so far and I have to say that for freeze dried food the flavor and texture is pretty good. I liked the chicken and rice flavor in particular and the chili mac was quite tasty also.

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Mountain House Size 10 Cans Survival Food Review – What I Didn’t Like

It’s freeze dried food, so know what you’re getting into with that. It is not the same as regular canned food but the trade off is that this stuff will last a quarter century. I’d like it better if it came with a scoop in the can but that’s minor flaw. I’d also like to see this have some sort of built in mechanism for opening the can. This is a #10 can so you’re going to need a big can opener. Make sure you have a couple in with your preppers stuff if you’re planning on using these cans because if you don’t they are going to be a PITA to open.

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Mountain House Size 10 Cans Survival Food Review – Conclusions

Mountain House Noodles and Chicken survival food

Mountain House Noodles and Chicken survival food has a very long shelf life

Having survival food is something that every prepper should not take for granted. You need to have food that’s shelf stable, not because you think that once the balloon goes up it’s going to be decades before things get sorted out but because you want to buy and store this stuff then not have to worry about it going bad of vermin getting into it and these Mountain House #10 cans do the trick nicely. I’ve picked up about a dozen of these so far in a variety of flavors ordering 2 or 3 at a time when I’m getting other stuff for my prepper planning and I recommend you do the same.
