Preppers Bug Out Bag – Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9

Today lets take a look at an item that every prepper needs as part of their bug out bag, the survival knife. There is a huge variety of survival knives out there and to be completely honest I think a lot of preppers get to the point where they start feeling a bit overwhelmed at all of the different choices available for the various items that end up going into a bug out bag.

By now you know that I don’t necessarily subscribe to the theory that preppers need to always buy the most expensive items in a given category when assembling their bug out bag. I tend to look for a combination of utility, durability and value. Preppers should be able to assemble their survival kit or bug out bag without breaking the bank on every item so I’m always pleased when I find a piece of geaer that turns out to be excellent and affordable. Today that item is the Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9!

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9 – What Is It?

The Schrade Extreme Survival Knife is a military style knife with full tang construction – this means that from the tip of the blade to the butt it is all one piece of steel. This is the best type of construction when it comes to knives as it provides the most strength. The knife is made of quality 1095 steel which is good because it’s strong, affordable and can be sharpened to a fine edge that will hold up to lots of use. The Schrade Extreme Survival Knife weighs in at about 1 pound which gives it ample heft for cutting and even some chopping tasks. (This won’t be a substitute for a real hatchet but it’d work in a pinch for some light brush cutting, making tent poles, etc.)

The blade is coated in a grey coating which protects the steel and keeps it from being reflective. The blade is one quarter inch wide which is pretty beefy compared to a lot of other survival knives. It’s good, solid construction that any prepper could rely on. The blade has a drop point profile and a flat ground edge, it is not serrated. The grind on this knife is pretty deep which is what makes it suitable for minor chopping and fieldcraft. Lastly the handle is made of a plastic/rubber composite which makes it strong and “grippy”. The handle is secured to the blade with 4 recessed bolts and the whole thing has a ridged surface that ensures you can keep hold of it, even in wet conditions.

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9 – What I Liked

I really like most everything about this knife, the one piece construction, the non-refelctive coating and the rubberized handle are all excellent. This knife will hold up to almost any use a prepper could put it to from chopping up your dinner to brush removal and fieldcraft. The knifes weight also helps ensure that it will give you some leverage when chopping or chipping and you can work it around without fear of snapping the blade too easily.

The grip is well thought out with cuts outs for your fingers and also has a good sized hole to attach it to a lanyard. The 1095 steel will take and hold a good edge and this knife isn’t going to turn into a butter knife after the first time you use it. The handle is meaty but it’s well designed – so much so that almost any prepper would be comfortable using this regardless of whether you have large or small hands.

The knife comes with a high quality black ballistic nylon sheath that has an outer pocket with a buckle and leg tie. This knife can be carried on your person or attached to your bug out bag via the MOLLE attachment points.

And now for one of the best features of this knife, the price. The Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9 comes in at an MSRP of $66 but can be easily found for around $40 at Amazon and other online retailers. I can’t state this any plainer, this is a solid, well made knife, coming it at nearly 1 pound of high quality steel for around 40 bucks. That is an outstanding price and makes this knife a must buy that every prepper should be confident would be a great addition to their bug out bag.

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9 – What I Didn’t Like

As I said above, I mostly like this knife but I do have a couple of minor quibbles with it. Firstly, the blade of is made of good quality steel but it is carbon steel and not stainless. The protective coating takes care of most of that but you are going to need to keep the edge protected with some mineral oil as part of the your maintenance routine. This means if it gets packed into your bug out bag you’re going to need to inspect and oil it occasionally. Also this knife doesn’t have a pommel. The handle and steel are flush at the butt end though so you could use it to crush or hammer on something if push comes to shove. Even with those (very minor) faults I’d still say this is a great piece of gear for preppers looking to put together a bug out bag or add a survival knife to an emergency survival kit.

Preppers Bug Out Bag – Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9 – Conclusions

When it comes down to it, any prepper would be hard pressed to beat the Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9 for value and utility. Sure you could spend hundreds of dollars on a hand crafted work of art and it will most definitely get the job done. If you can afford it, go for it! But for most preppers and people looking to build a bug out bag this knife is an extremely solid choice and an awesome value. I really can’t say enough positive about this knife but don’t just take my word for it. You can also look at the ratings it has on Amazon, currently rated 4.5 stars with almost 200 user reviews submitted! At the end of the day I can solidly recommend the Schrade Extreme Survival Knife SCHF9 as a piece of kit that all preppers should be confident to add to their bug out bag.
